30 JAN 2009 TASKFORCE ON PROBLEM OF RETRENCHED WORKERS SET TO TACKLE PROBLEMS
Jan 30th, 2009 | By nizam | Category: Press ReleasesSHAH ALAM – The by Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor today chaired the inaugural meeting of the taskforce formed to tackle the problems of retrenched workers for Selangor. Apart from the state executive councillor’s members, several government departments and state subsidiaries, the meeting was also attended by the Federation of Manufacturers, Malaysia (FMM), Malaysia Trade Union Congress (MTUC) and Malaysian Industry Development Agency.
In the hour-long meeting, the taskforce was briefed on the state’s economic situation, the standard of awareness on the effects of the gloomy economic outlook and the impact of the economy on job opportunities.
Among the issues raised include establishing an effective system in recording the data of retrenched workers, providing accurate statistics of retrenched workers, providing details on the job market and other plans of action in helping the retrenched workers.
Those who attended also heard the views and proposals from FMM, MTUC, MIDA and the welfare department on ways and means to tackle the problems raised and among the suggestions include setting up registration counters for retrenched workers at local council offices.
The taskforce also discussed the possibility of getting the feedback and cooperation from private companies and job agencies in managing the data of retrenched workers and job-matching.
The taskforce will meet again next week and the Manpower Department is expected to give a briefing on how the state can benefit from the Federal Government’s RM200 million allocation for the re-training of retrenched workers. The taskforce will also meet employment agencies and small traders’ associations to seek their views in providing solutions to help ease the hardship of retrenched workers.
The state government hopes that the policies introduced by this taskforce can minimize the impact of the economic slowdown on the working force in Selangor.
