SHAH ALAM, Mar 13 – Owners of illegal houses of worship could be given compounds until they receive accreditation from the government.

“This compound will have to be paid continuously until the affected owners apply for this accreditation,” said Chairman for Permanent Committee on Study, Research and Local Government, Ronnie Liu.

He said, the decision made by the State Executive Council Meeting on 9 July of last year also agreed that local authorities would take strict action on any newly structures constructed without consent, including suraus and mosques.

He added, all PBTs or other government agencies would have to inform the state government before demolishing places of worship.

Ronnie added that each application to build a place of worship would be referred to the Non-Muslim Affairs Committee meeting which was held six times a year before being brought before the state executive council meeting.

Thus far there are 2,864 registered places  of worship which include temples, churches, mosques and suraus throughout Selangor.

He said this in reply to Khasim Abdul Aziz (Pas-Lembah Jaya) during this morning’s state legislative assembly meeting. – NOOR ALLIA KASSIM
