Aduns Free to Speak During Assembly – Abdul Khalid
Mar 12th, 2009 | By nizam | Category: NewsSHAH ALAM, Mar 12 – Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim regards former Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo warning towards Hulu Klang Assemblyman Shaari Sungib on his statement during the state legislative assembly meeting today as improper.
During the incident which occurred outside the assembly hall, Dr Khir had told Shaari that his wife (Datin Seri Zahrah Kechik) cannot drive and would not forgive Shaari if she were to suffer a miscarriage.
Dr Khir was also said to have touched Shaari’s beard and said that he (Shaari) as an old man should examine his facts before making a statement.
The incident was believed to have been due to Shaari’s claims during today’s meeting, that a Range Rover worth RM500,000 bought by the Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB) from a company in which it held stakes, had been given to Datin Seri Zahrah to use as the wife of the then KDEB Chairman.
The Dato’ Menteri Besar when met by reporters said that every Adun had the freedom to speak or give information in the assembly meeting.
“The Assembly is a place where everything relating to the people, administration, are brought up so that the people will know the truth.
“That’s why its proceedings are protected by laws to the extent that some may feel it is misused to give false information, because there is absolute freedom of discussing issues without fear or favour,” he said.
He added, this was a test of maturity which should be handled properly, just as the Sultan of Selangor on Tuesday had reminded all Aduns to respect one another.
Meanwhile, when asked to comment on the incident, Shaari said that the situation which was initially calm became slightly emotional.
“To me it wasn’t a threat as he was merely stating his dissatisfaction.
“I do not need to take any action (after this) as I think it was just another incident,” he said. – NOOR ALLIA KASSIM
