Selcat to Hold Public Hearing on Balkis Issue
Mar 12th, 2009 | By nizam | Category: NewsSHAH ALAM, Mar 12 – The Selangor State Assembly (Dun) may create history as the Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) will hold its first public hearing from 23 to 31 March.
Selangor Dun Speaker, Teng Chang Khim said to date 10 witnesses would be called to explain sponsorship by state government subsidiary companies to the Wives of Selangor Welfare and Assemblymen and MPs Charity Organisation (Balkis).
“In Selcat’s investigations or hearings there is no offender or accused person, there are only witnesses who come forward to help Selcat identify and check whether there are any leaks in government administration,” he said.
Balkis President, Datin Seri Zahrah Kechik, is among those expected to be called as witness.
He said after hearing explanations from all parties, a report would be tabled during the next Dun meeting.
He explained that Selcat was merely a committee set up by the assembly to monitor the government’s achievements.
Therefore if it was found that there was some ‘flexibility’ in the procedures, then any further action will be taken by the executive.
“We will (only) make suggestions and it would be up to the executive whether or not to do as we suggest,” he added.
He said this public hearing, which had never before been conducted, was a reform in the system of investigation through Dun committees.
Teng said the public hearing could be viewed live on the state government’s official website at www.selangor.gov.my.
