Feb 16th, 2009 | By nizam | Category: NewsRAWANG, February 16 – Single mothers and the disabled (OKU) around the Rawang State Assembly area (DUN) are encouraged to learn and attend handicraft classes as the skills gleaned could reap a handsome profit.
Women’s Salaam Coordinator (Ehomemakers) Tan Pooi Lai said, their involvement in that field would indirectly help encourage single mothers and OKU in these areas to become entrepreneurs which would give them an opportunity to increase their source of income.
“Our weekly basket weaving classes are an example of how they could increase their source of income.
“Therefore, we and the Rawang Adun office welcome single mothers around the Rawang area to attend these classes,” she said when met at the community hall of Kampung Lim Tim, here, this afternoon.
She said, the classes which had just been introduced early this year, now has 11 participants (single mothers) from different races and she hoped this number would increase in the future.
“We hope that there will soon be more single mothers attending this class,” she said, adding that each single mother also received a mileage allowance of RM35 weekly for attending the class.
Therefore, she asked the chairman of the Village Safety and Development Committee (JKKK) and residents associations to identify single mothers who were interested to participate in the class.
“Single mothers who are interested can obtain forms and further information from the Rawang Adun office,” she said.
