SHAH ALAM, February 15- The wife of Selangor Dato’ Menteri Besar, Puan Sri Salbiah Tunut was today elected the President of the Selangor Women’s Welfare and Charity Organisation  (PEKAWANIS) for the period of 2009 to 2011.

The appointment took immediate effect after she won without contest in the first PEKAWANIS Annual General Meeting at the official residence of the Dato’ Menteri Besar, in Bukit Megawati here this morning.

The decision to appoint Puan Seri Salbiah was made by about 30 representatives from all over Selangor.

The post of Vice President is held by Batu Tiga State Assemblywoman, Rodziah Ismail who is also a member of the Selangor State Executive Council.

Meanwhile, Special Officer in the Dato’ Menteri Besar’s office, Norani Shamsudin, was appointed Honorary Secretary while Azlin Hezri, who is the wife of the Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament,  is her assistant.

The wife of Chairperson for Permanent Committee on Health, Estate Workers, Poverty and Caring Government, Dr A Xavier Jayakumar, Sheila Christine Devaraj, has been entrusted with the role of honorary treasurer.

Present at the meeting this morning was PEKAWANIS patron, Adinda Puteri Tuanku Selangor, Y.A.M. Datin Paduka Tengku  Puteri Hajah Arafiah Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj.

In similar developments, PEKAWANIS which was established on 22 October last year is now actively involved in helping the less fortunate in this state.

Projects such as the ‘Laman Dapur’ project in Ijok are among its pilot projects aimed at easing the burden of the rakyat, especially single mothers.

Besides the ‘Laman Dapur’ project this organisation is also identifying other projects for single mothers, such as agricultural produce and sewing school uniforms. – MURIZA ABDUL HAMID
