SHAH ALAM, January 23 – The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj today presented a RM1 million donation on behalf of the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) to the Yayasan Amal Selangor for the humanitarian mission to Palestine.

A replica of the cheque was handed over to the Vice President 3 Yayasan Amal Selangor, Dr Halimah Ali, in a ceremony witnessed by the Dato’ Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in a ceremony at the Istana Bukit Kayangan near here.

Also present were the Chairman of permanent committees for Islamic Affairs, Malay Customs, Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Dato’ Dr Hasan Mohamed Ali, Chairman of Selangor Zakat Board Trustees, Tan Sri Syed Anwar Ibni Syed Putra Jamalullail and Chairman of Selangor Islamic Religious Council, Dato’ Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa.

Yayasan Amal Selangor, which had been entrusted by the state government in carrying out the humanitarian to Palestine, sent its first team there on January 17.

Previously the state government had also contributed RM500,000 to enable Yayasan Amal Selangor to give medical and social aid to the victims involved.

Meanwhile, Abdul Khalid told reporters that those who were interested in volunteering for the mission, including doctors and engineers, could contact the Yayasan Amal Selangor.

He said, the humanitarian mission will be continued in attempts to help the Palestinians who had become the victims of Jewish cruelty.

At the same time, Dr Halimah said Yayasan Amal will identify the form of assistance that can be given to the people of Gaza after receiving reports from the first mission team which will be returning tomorrow.

She said, besides assistance in the form of food and medication, Yayasan Amal was prepared to help in other ways, including clean water and educational support to the people of Gaza.

“I understand that the situation there is extremely desperate, whereby its infrastructure and public amenities including schools, hospitals and universities have been destroyed by zionists.

“Besides basic necessities they also need moral support from us in order to go on with their lives,” she said, adding that assistance from counsellors, interpreters and teachers would also be most welcome.

She said, the foundation would also be sending direct assistance without going through a third party as suggested by the Sultan of Selangor.  – NOOR ALLIA KASSIM
